This is...about us
The general trend of population migration from small town to urban cities that occurred during the fifties and sixties has reversed. Woodville has not only survived and adapted to changing social and economic circumstances, but successfully flourishes with new energy and new opportunities. Woodville today is an active and busy community whose bright future reflects the growing trends towards lifestyles in a peaceful relaxing country environment while maintaining links with nearby urban centres.
The peaceful countenance of Woodville belies an interesting and dynamic history and a host of illuminating characters, from the legendary horse trainer Eric Ropiha, to Ruru Karaitana (1909 – 1970) who wrote and recorded NZ’s first record, ‘Blue Smoke’ in 1948, to Dick ‘Hurricane’ Hartridge, former sparring partner to Mohammed Ali, Ingeman Johanson and Roberto Duran. And great stories of horses, the railway and the Gorge reflect a town whose place in New Zealand’s folklore is assured.
Woodville has a population of 1401.
The organisation that represents the Woodville community and works together with the Tararua District Council is Woodville Districts Vision Inc (more about this organisation can be found on the 'contact us' page). Copies of the minutes of their meetings can be found herehttp://www.tararuadc.govt.nz/Publications/Agendas_Minutes/Woodville_Districts_Vision
